Local students will have the opportunity to explore the world of building and skilled trades during the inaugural “Kids Construction Camp,” scheduled June 23 at the Peak Innovation Center in Fort Smith.
Hosted by the Greater Fort Smith Association of Home Builders in partnership with the Fort Smith Museum of Kids and the Peak Innovation Center, the one-day camp is designed for incoming fourth- through sixth-graders. The event offers hands-on activities that introduce children to careers in construction and the trades through fun, interactive learning.
Campers will work together to build derby racetracks, designed by Cobblestone Homes and Justin Green Custom Homes, which will be used in a friendly race to wrap up the day. One winning student from each grade level will take home a completed track, while one additional track will be featured in the Fort Kids Museum space at the Bakery District.
“We are thrilled to offer this fun and educational opportunity to local students,” said DeAnne Hankins, executive officer of the Greater Fort Smith Association of Home Builders. “It’s all about sparking interest in the trades at an early age while letting kids explore their creativity.”
The event is made possible by support from local businesses and volunteers. Arvest Bank will provide lunch for the campers, and Specialty Woodworks donated all the lumber and building materials. Volunteers from the community will guide students through the building process, ensuring a safe and memorable experience.
The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Peak Innovation Center, 5900 Painter Lane. Media are invited to attend.
