Video games bring generations together, new report finds

(WIFR) – A new report from the Entertainment Software Association, a company that advocates for the video gaming industry, is breaking stereotypes about who plays video games.

The report found that two-thirds of the U.S. population plays video games regularly, making gaming one of America’s most popular pastimes.

And it’s not young people. The report revealed that adults aged 50 and up actually play more games than 18-year-olds, especially puzzle and multiplayer games that help them connect with others. In fact, 25% of people over the age of 65 game, proving grandparents might be spending more time on their favorite games than most teens.

“A lot of times what people enjoy about video games at any age is the ability to connect with others,” said Stanley Pierre-Louis, President and CEO of the company. “And that’s true of the older populations as well. The ability to play with one another really got heightened during COVID. When people couldn’t be physically together, video games provided that outlet.”

The findings also showed that 70% of parents play video games and 80% of them say they play alongside their kids. Many see it as a great way to bond and create more fun family nights together.

Most parents say they prefer their children play online games rather than go through social media, seeing gaming as a healthier and more interactive way to connect.

Stanley adds, “In fact, 77% of parents prefer their kids play video games online than do social media and that’s because they know there are trusted and safe mechanisms built into gameplay and it’s exciting for them to know that kids are playing in a safe and fun environment.”
