It’s heartbreaking to watch anyone struggle with or lose their mobility, and that’s especially true for young children. But one rehabilitation facility in Kansas City is helping kids and adults in need regain some of their independence. Ability KC is an organization and rehab center that offers specialized rehabilitation programs and a wide range of therapy services. These services can be life-changing, and that was the case for a young girl named Marleigh. Atira Ivy, Marleigh’s mom, said that they discovered Marleigh had a brain tumor after noticing her struggle with balance. After surgery to remove it, things got worse. Ivy said that Marleigh couldn’t walk, talk or sit up. That’s when her doctors recommended Ability KC. “I have seen tremendous differences,” Ivy said. Thanks to Ability KC, Marleigh is walking, playing and even working on running. Her mom said that if it weren’t for her therapy, she’d probably still be learning to walk. “She’s come a long way,” said Megan Andrew, a physical therapist with Ability KC. “She’s a very determined little kid.” Ability KC fills the gaps between what insurance companies can cover and what families can pay. Often, insurance companies will have a strict limit for visits to therapy sessions, Andrew said. But in order to keep changing lives, Ability KC needs support. KMBC 9 Cares for Kids is partnering with Ability KC to help cover therapy sessions. Our goal is to raise money to cover therapy for at least 200 children. Each session costs around $100, but any donation helps get closer to the goal. You can find more information or donate to help provide these life-changing therapies here.
