CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The kids have only been out of school for a short time. And you may already be running out of things to do with them. We’ve got just the person to help with this.
Known as Charlotte Mama on Instagram, we welcome Karla Hsu.
“Summer doesn’t have to be expensive to be magical,” says Karla Hsu, local mom and creator of the popular Instagram account @CharlotteMama. “There are so many fun, free or low-cost ways to keep your kids engaged and happy all season long.”
Summer break is a time for fun and freedom—but for many parents, it can also be a challenge to keep kids entertained and off screens. Experts agree that keeping children active and engaged during the summer is essential for their development and well-being.
Why Keeping Kids Busy Matters:
- Prevents Summer Learning Loss: Staying mentally active helps kids retain what they learned during the school year.
- Supports Physical Health: Outdoor play and movement are key to healthy growth and development.
- Encourages Creativity: Unstructured time can spark imagination and problem-solving skills.
- Builds Social Skills: Group activities and outings help kids practice communication and teamwork.
- Reduces Screen Time: Keeping kids engaged with real-world experiences helps balance digital habits.
“There are so many fun, free or low-cost ways to keep your kids engaged and happy all season long” says Hsu.
Here are some great ideas to keep your kids plug in and busy:
- THE CURIOUS GEORGE EXHIBIT AT IMAGINON
Step into the world of everyone’s favorite mischievous monkey! The Curious George Exhibit at ImaginOn is a hands-on, interactive experience where kids can explore George’s world through science, math, and engineering-themed activities. From building structures to launching rockets, this exhibit is both educational and wildly fun—and best of all, admission is free.
“ImaginOn is one of our favorite spots year-round, but this exhibit is a must-see,” Karla shares. “It’s perfect for preschool and early elementary kids.”
- SUMMER READING PROGRAMS AT THE LIBRARY
Encourage your child’s love of reading with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s Summer Break program. Kids can earn prizes just for reading books, attending events, and completing fun challenges. Many branches also host storytimes, crafts, and STEM activities throughout the summer. “It’s a great way to keep kids learning without it feeling like school,” Karla says. “Plus, it’s all free!”
- WATER PLAY AND SPLASH PADS
When the heat is on, cool off with some splashy fun! The Stallings Municipal Park offers a fantastic playground and splash pad combo—perfect for a full morning or afternoon of play. Another great option is Cordelia Park in NoDa, which features a public pool and shaded playground for just a few dollars per visit. “Water play is always a hit with my kids,” Karla says. “We pack snacks, towels, and make a day of it without spending much at all.”
- DISCOVERY PLACE: THE OCEAN XPERIENCE
Dive into the deep blue at Discovery Place Science with their new Oceans immersive exhibit. Kids can explore marine life, touch sea creatures, and even experience the ocean in a whole new way through virtual reality and interactive displays. Don’t miss the IMAX theater, which is currently showing stunning ocean-themed documentaries. “Discovery Place is worth every penny,” Karla notes. “It’s educational, exciting, and a great way to beat the heat indoors.”
