Kansas band kids mingle with Shriners patients ahead of weekend bowl game

DODGE CITY, Kan. (WIBW) – The Kansas Shrine Bowl is this weekend and some of the best football players, cheerleaders, and band members from around the state are getting a new perspective before the game.

The annual game is a chance for players to display their talents, but leading up to the game they get to see what the Shriners stand for. The Hospital Experience allows them to meet kids receiving treatment at Shriners hospitals, and even engage in a few activities designed to emulate the challenges of different conditions or disabilities.

Two Topeka students taking part in the Band Camp Hospital Experience Thursday called it eye-opening.

“Seeing these kids and how they’ve persevered through all their challenges has been a big thing,” Reagan, from Seaman High School, said. “Seeing them and wanting to help them becoming friends with them and see them coming back has been one of the best experiences ever.”

“Coming back and seeing the Hospital Experience and meeting all the people and getting to come back and meet them again, and learn their new stories, learn their growth, like ‘Elizabeth is running now,’” Santa Fe Trail High School’s Vanessa explained. “It’s so great to see them grow.”

Players and cheerleaders are scheduled for their own experiences Friday.
