Knox County food pantry set to begin summer program to feed kids

ROCKLAND, Maine (WABI) – The AIO Food Pantry in Rockland is launching its Weekly Student Summer Meal Program along the Midcoast.

The organization provides kids in need during the school year with food for the weekends, but this is the first year of the summer program.

Libraries in Rockland and surrounding communities will have meal kits on Fridays throughout the summer with no I.D. registration or proof of income required.

Staff says while summer along the Midcoast can seem easy at times, there are still families in need, and this is a way to help bridge that gap.

“It isn’t any easier in the summer,” answered Executive Director Alan Kearl. “People still experience food insecurity, and that’s this whole idea, ‘Oh, kids are off school, guess they don’t need food,’ is no. They need food in the summer, too, which is why we felt like it was important to extend, figure out how we can continue this very important and very helpful program. How can we continue that even throughout the summer months which kids are growing, and exercising and out and about and hungry.”

The program officially begins next Friday. If you’re interested in signing up, head here for my information.
