Here’s a menu item at Esther’s Overboard that customers won’t find on any other food truck in Sioux Falls: frog legs.
“We serve good-quality food, executed well that you can’t get anywhere else,” said Esther Zoss, who started the business with a few events last year with her husband, Clint. The two have full-time jobs, but Esther’s typically is out every weekend for pop-ups and events in Sioux Falls and other towns in southeast South Dakota.
And just so you know, the Zosses aren’t out catching frogs – the legs come from a food supplier out of Marshall, Minnesota. “They’re a popular item,” she said.
Zoss describes the menu as surf and turf. Along with the frog legs, there are chilled and warm lobster rolls, lobster mac-and-cheese and beer-battered shrimp. Soon to be added: a lobster grilled cheese sandwich.
For turf, there are half-pound short rib burgers, a fried bologna sandwich and brisket mac-and-cheese.
Prices range from $13 for the fried bologna sandwich to $30 for the lobster rolls.
“You get what you pay for,” Zoss said of the quality ingredients.
The First Mate items aren’t as expensive, with $6 for a half-pound of french fries, half-pound of chicken fries or a seasonal salad and $8 for half-pound of Nathan’s mini corn dogs.
Features also pop on the menu occasionally. Recent specials have included a Maryland soft shell crab sandwich and pork belly mac-and-cheese.
For their full-time jobs, Esther works as an indirect sales representative for a food manufacturer, and Clint is a hazardous materials driver. “I’ve been in food all my life,” she said. Almost two decades ago, they owned Beresford Third Street Grill & Catering, and she also worked in food service management.
Esther’s Overboard is available for public and private events on the weekends. Find locations on Facebook or Street Food Finder.
This weekend, the trailer will be at Klassix in Beresford on Friday night and at the Second Saturday Market on Saturday night at the 8th & Railroad Center in downtown Sioux Falls. Other upcoming dates include July 2 for Bike Night at Red Rock Bar & Grill in Rowena and July 3 at Ben’s Brewing in Yankton.
