HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. — On Monday, June 16, Food for People, Inc. (FFP) announced that they exceeded their Farmer Funds Challenge by raising $182,000 to purchase produce from local farmers.
In a Facebook post, FFP thanked more than 300 supporters, the North Coast Op, Melanie Williams, and Barbara Goldberg, for contributing to the Locally Delicious Farmers Fund.
FFP said the fund aims to allow them to contract directly with local farmers to provide high-quality produce and other foods to those experiencing hunger in their community. Funds are provided to local family farms at the beginning of the growing season to defray seasonal start-up costs of production. In exchange, farmers agree to grow a specific crop for the food bank that season.
FFP said they operate 23 pantries that assist 15% of the Humboldt County population with food distributions, assists the Humboldt Counties Calfresh Task Force, has work readiness & job training, emergency disaster response, supports local food systems with grant funding, nutrition education programs, advocacy programs, Local Store Food Recovery programs and has a nonprofit network program offering low-cost food resources to nonprofit agencies seeking to provide foods to their low-income program participants.
Recently, FFP executive director Carly Robbins urged federal representatives to take action to keep services and supports intact and reduce the current uncertainty and confusion they said was brought by federal funding freezes and cuts to food assistance programs.
