How to Help Kids Go from Pre-Camp Jitters to Camp Excitement

(KNSI) – Summer camp can be exciting for kids, but it can also trigger serious anxiety, but one local expert professes proper preparation prevents panic.

Central Minnesota Mental Health Center Master Licensed Psychologist Monique Miller explains that it is crucial for first-time campers. “For adults to be very prepared and not hurried and worried. This means giving yourself plenty of time so that you have the time to prepare your child.”

That could include getting packed up the night before, visiting the camp ahead of time to meet the counselors, or showing kids the facility online.

For nervous first-timers, Miller recommends easing into the camp experience. “I always recommend starting with shorter term weekend type camps. Try day camp first. Some kids don’t do well overnight somewhere else.”

When kids are ready for overnight camp, Miller suggests sending them with reminders of home. “Send transitional objects like pillows, stuffies and blankets that might help them feel more safe and comfortable when they’re away from you.”

A family picture can be especially helpful, she adds.

If a child has an emotional breakdown, Miller wants parents to stay calm and avoid joining the chaos. Instead, she recommends being reassuring so the child can handle the challenge to turn camp anxiety into camp excitement.
