
A father drowned over the weekend after rushing into the ocean to save his two children.Authorities said the incident happened on Father’s Day. Antwon Wilson, 33, of Lauderhill, had been spending time with his children at a beach in Fort Lauderdale.Dispatchers began receiving 911 calls shortly after 7 p.m., reporting a drowning in the ocean near the B Ocean Resort, according to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department.Ocean Rescue lifeguards had gone off duty at 7 p.m., but lieutenants wrapping up their day heard the call and rushed to the scene.“They were able to turn their trucks around and be the first responders from our fire rescue department,” said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Daniel Moran.Officials said a young girl between 7 and 10 years old was struggling in the water. Her father, Antwon Wilson, was in the ocean trying to help her. The girl’s sibling was also swimming nearby and appeared to be in distress, according to the police department.A good Samaritan jumped into the water to help but became overwhelmed and returned to shore.“The father made it to the daughter and was able to keep her afloat until lifeguards were able to get in and pull the daughter out,” Moran said.Wilson’s other child was also rescued from the water. However, Moran said Wilson went underwater and did not resurface.Authorities began searching for Wilson and found him a few minutes later underwater. He was pulled to shore and taken to a nearby hospital. However, officials said Wilson did not survive.One of Wilson’s children was also taken to the hospital, along with the good Samaritan who had tried to help. As of Monday, police said both patients were “awake and responsive.”
