The Annual Food Truck Fest helps fight food insecurity in southeast Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – If you’re looking for some fun for a good cause, here’s a festive way to give back to the community this week.

On Wednesday, June 18, LincOne Credit Union is kicking off its third annual food truck fest fundraiser.

You can enjoy some local favorites while helping to feed families across parts of Nebraska.

Summer is typically filled with fun-packed days with food on the grill and full bellies. But the food bank of Lincoln says 70,000 people in southeast Nebraska are living in food insecurity year-round.

The annual food truck fest is just one way you can help while having a good time.

For the third year, the business is hosting its Annual Food Truck Fest in its parking lot. Organizers say the event, which features local favorites and live music, is put on each year to raise awareness for local food insecurity.

“It was over 500 pounds donated in the previous year,” said Michael Bartek, the marketing manager. “We’re always looking to donate more and increase that goal larger and larger every year.”

Donations from the event will head to the Food Bank of Lincoln, where food is packaged and sent off to community partners that help feed those in need.

“1000 pounds of food would be over 800 meals into the community,” said Jason Pauling with the Food Bank. “Something like that goes a long way, along with the dollars that we raise, that we can go out and buy that food.”

Pauling said they’ve seen a progressive uptick in food scarcity. Right now, 70,000 people don’t have enough to eat. He said just three years prior, that number was 48,000.

“People are just having a hard time making ends meet,” Pauling explained. “Especially if you’re living paycheck to paycheck. You have a job, but you have a medical expense of unforeseen expense.”

Organizers at LincOne said they will have barrels set up around the free food truck event on wednesday for people in the community to donate.

He says the event for the food bank is an expression of their shared values: “People helping People.”

“We’re happy to help promote them, and what they do to help the Lancaster community as well,” said Bartek.

The event runs from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

While entry to the food truck fest is free, non-perishable donations are encouraged.
