LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – Ten Louisiana State Troopers are teaching leadership to middle school kids in the community this week at the “Skills for Life” camp.
Louisiana State Police and Westlake Corporation joined forces to hold the camp for its 25th year.
Today, the children learned about boater safety and how to correctly wear a life jacket under the guidance of Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries.
“Like when you’re in a boat, you have to have some equipment like flares, med kits, and life jackets, and throwables just in case somebody gets injured or falls over,” said camper Sharod Guillory.
Guillory learned how to use a life jacket when he was three, but he says this camp helped refresh him on the importance of one.
Another camper, Kyrick Picou, says he has ridden boats and jet skis, but understands not taking the proper precautions could lead to an injury.
With 40 campers attending the camp, each of them had a chance to show off their speed in relay races putting on life jackets.
“The boating skills that we taught this morning and those things can really not only help you in your life, but save a life,” said event organizer Suzanne McFatter.
Westlake Corporation Administrative Assistant McFatter says the camp helps the children create a bond with law enforcement.
“I’ve seen them take a kid aside and talk to them, maybe a kid that they see that’s struggling to join the team activities that we have,” said McFatter.
The campers are paired with each of the troopers throughout the week of the camp.
