Rochester business owner avoids jail time in food stamp fraud case

Rochester, N.Y. — The owner of a local convenience store who was convicted of food stamp fraud was sentenced Monday to two years of supervised release.

Zina Amba Mbile Mbile, 46, of Rochester, who owns Beni Foods on Dewey Avenue, reportedly accepted SNAP benefits in exchange for non-food items, including cosmetic products, between March of 2020 and July 23, 2024, according to prosecutors.

Mbile also reportedly exchanged cash for food stamp benefits for a profit.

In total, Mbile fraudulently caused $246,890 to be deposited into his store’s bank accounts for food that was never bought, prosecutors said.

He was ordered to pay that amount in restitution to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, according to prosecutors.
