Salvation Army Center of Hope seeking donations for food supplies ahead of summer

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – Nonperishable cans of food line the shelves, but it likely won’t remain that way without public monetary and food donations.

There are some gaps in the supplies, and fridges are even empty.

Salvation Army Marketing Coordinator Morgan Shiyou said 400 families depend on them for meals.

“We’re just asking for a little help this summer to help us get through – get these families through the summer,” she said.

“We have kids that are home from school, and they’re at home. A lot of them are latchkey kids; they are home by themselves while their parents are working. So these are working families asking for food and primarily just to feed their kids,” she added.

Summer is a crucial time for the Gulfport Center of Hope. Shiyou said that as summer comes, so does a depletion of resources.

“It seems to come every summer; we have a summer slump. Donations don’t come in as much, food items don’t come in as much, but the need is still there,” she said.

The center is not only asking for shelf-stable items. Cereal, milk, and water are in big demand.

“Dried beans, breads, cereal bars, anything a kid can make easily in a microwave or toaster. If you just want to buy gallons of milk, that’s fine too. Cereal is easy for kids to make at home while they’re by themselves,” she said.

Shiyou understands that a lot of people are trying to make ends meet. She says a donation of one item can make an impact.

“One can of beans or a jar of peanut butter, just one thing. If everybody could do one thing, it really does add up,” she said.

Donations can be dropped off at the Gulfport Salvation Army Center of Hope, located at 2019 22nd Street in Gulfport.
