‘You never know what’s going to happen’: Safe Kids hosts safety fair in Northport

NORTHPORT, Ala. (WBRC) – Some Northport-area families are now smarter about simple ways to protect their kids after attending an event this weekend where safety experts offered more than just advice on how to keep their children safe.

A lot goes into you keeping your kids safe. That’s why many families attend a recent safety fair hosted by Safe Kids at Northport City Hall.

“We want to help kids safe by teaching them how they can be safe in these different situations,” according to Charlene Wilkinson, Safe Kids Tuscaloosa coordinator.

They touched on fire safety, pool safety, gun safety, and pedestrian safety among other topics. First responders and safety advocates talked to adults and children. Supporters explained simple things they can do to protect them and keep them safe. They showed parents how to avoid leaving children in hot cars.

And kids were given the opportunity to play safety-related games so they could understand the importance of safety, even at a young age. That included how to safely cross a railroad track.

“I mean you never know what’s going to happen. I mean just always be prepared for the unexpected. Freak accidents happen every day. And also, they’re young. But try to make them aware of stuff as early as possible so they can know what’s going on around their surroundings,” Joseph and Holly Taylor told WBRC.

People who attended the event left with more than just information – groups handed out helmets and other safety materials for children and adults.
