United Way, Food Insecurity Coalition seeking donations in Community Food Drive

United Way of Bartholomew County and the Bartholomew County Food Insecurity Coalition are coordinating efforts in a Community Food Drive this month to address the growing number of local families in need.

Local census data reports that one in five children in the county live in poverty. With food pantries across the county reporting a sharp rise in requests for help, participating in the Community Food Drive is a way for local residents to get involved and support their neighbors facing hunger.

“Food insecurity continues to grow in our community, and food pantries historically see a dip in donations this time of the year,” Alicia Monroe, director of the Volunteer Action Center at United Way of Bartholomew County, said. “This food drive will help local food pantries meet the increased demand they are seeing right now.”

All food and monetary donations will support Love Chapel, the Salvation Army and Community Center of Hope. Monetary donations are especially valuable in allowing food pantries to harness food bank partnerships to get food at a discounted rate. Monetary donations can be made online and at www.uwbarthco.org and clicking on “Community Food Drive.”

Food donations can be dropped off at United Way of Bartholomew County, located at 1304 Hutchins Ave., throughout June.
