WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – The fifth Community Cultures Fest populated the 400 Block in downtown Wausau Saturday.
The event brings different cultural groups together to share traditions, art, music and food.
“It’s a really important year I think, especially with everything going on in the world, for people to be able to gather in the heart of the city to celebrate all of the diversity,” event coordinator Taylor Owens said.
Groups in attendance included the Hmong American Center and the Indian Society of Central Wisconsin. Both put on a dance performance.
“We’re here to support and to just get along and get to know our neighbors,” Hmong American Center executive director Bee Van Her said. “A lot of times we don’t get the chance to intermingle with each other.”
Swati Biswas, president of the Indian Society of Central Wisconsin, echoed Van Her’s statement.
“We are able to include people of different ethnicities and make this just much more accessible to people,” Biswas said.
Yee Leng Xiong was there with New Beginnings, a group that supports refugees who come to the Wausau area.
“This event here has been great because it gives our community a chance to be able to experience the diversity in our community and experience what it means to be a Wausonian, and somebody from Wisconsin,” Xiong said.
