Police: Teens tried to rob Columbia food delivery driver at gunpoint

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – Two teenagers are accused of trying to rob a Columbia food delivery driver at gunpoint.

The Columbia Police Department said a 14-year-old and a 13-year-old were both arrested and housed at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

CPD said the attempted robbery happened Thursday afternoon on Ripplemeyer Avenue. The teens allegedly ordered and paid for the food as the driver arrived at an apartment complex.

According to police, the driver fact-checked the information on the delivery app and realized the teens were lying. The driver then reportedly went back to their vehicle where three relatives, including two children, were passengers.

CPD said video surveillance then showed the 13-year-old standing in front of the vehicle in an effort to prevent them from leaving. The 14-year-old then allegedly had a gun on them as they approached the vehicle, banged on a door window before the driver and his family drove away from the scene. The victims were not hurt.

Police added that investigators later seized a gun from inside an apartment that came back stolen out of Georgia.

Both teens are charged with attempted armed robbery, four counts of kidnapping and criminal conspiracy. The 14-year-old was additionally charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a firearm under the age of 18.

“This crime is yet another example of children carrying firearms and committing adult crimes,” Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said in a statement.

No further details were immediately available.
