Children participating in a previous camp offered by St. Paul Lutheran Church learned some basic cooking skills with the help of some older kids. Cooking will again be part of the camp, which will be offered next week at the church, 400 S. 13th St.

Rescue Story will be the theme for the mornings while the afternoons will offer everything from cooking to local history during a weeklong experience for kids being offered by St. Paul Lutheran Church.

It is a combination of Vacation Bible School in the mornings and a camp in the afternoons that will be held Monday through Friday at the church, 400 S. 13th St.

Rescue Story is the theme of the morning Vacation Bible School, according to Lynn Meyer, the lead organizer of the school and camp.

“We will be celebrating our community helpers and learning Old Testament and New Testament stories about how God rescues,” she said.

The community helpers, she said, include firefighters, police officers, doctors, nurses, lifeguards and even utility company linemen.

The Vacation Bible School portion of the week will be from 9 a.m. to noon each day. It is free.

The camp will be from noon to 3:30 p.m. It will cost $10 for the entire week. Meyer said students staying for the afternoon camp should bring a sack lunch.

On two afternoons, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will conduct a cooking class. Meyer said the students will learn how to make homemade salsa, among other things.

Other organizations that will be part of the afternoon camp will include Community Orchard, Smitty’s Lawn and Landscape, the Fort Museum and Frontier Village, Fort Dodge Fire Department, Blanden Memorial Art Museum; Faiferlick Tae Kwon Do, Martial Arts and Fitness; and a bookmobile sponsored by Nestle Purina PetCare.

“We’re very thankful for our community partners,” Meyer said. “They’re donating their time and expertise.”

The Vacation Bible School and the camp are for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

“It’s a very fun-filled, safe week of learning about God’s love for us and meeting new friends,” Meyer said. “I would also say that St. Paul Lutheran Church and School is honored to provide an opportunity for children in our community.”

Parents can sign their children up for Vacation Bible School and the camp online or in person.

To sign up online, go to stpaulfd.org and click on “VBS registration.”

To register in person, go to the church at 8:30 a.m. Monday.
