AAFCO and Kansas State seek experts to review new animal food ingredients

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), in collaboration with Kansas State University’s Olathe Innovation Campus, is seeking subject matter experts to join a new initiative aimed at streamlining ingredient approvals in the animal food industry.

The Scientific Review of Ingredient Submissions (SRIS) program will assemble independent scientific panels to evaluate animal food ingredients for safety under the Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) framework. Candidates with expertise in animal nutrition or related sciences are invited to apply.

Panels will include university-based and independent consultants from across the U.S., covering a range of species and scientific disciplines. Approved ingredients reviewed under SRIS will be published in AAFCO’s Official Publication, a key resource recognized by both regulators and industry.

“The collaboration between the review panel, K-State and AAFCO will ensure the SRIS process is safe, scientific and streamlined to meet the industry’s demand for new ingredients,” said Haley Larson, PhD, K-State Olathe and SRIS scientific lead.

The SRIS process is designed to offer ingredient reviews twice as fast as traditional methods, while maintaining scientific rigor and transparency.

“Composing a review panel of independent experts from across the country will offer a new level of innovation in animal food that we have not seen before,” said Austin Therrell, executive director of AAFCO. “Manufacturers, and animal owners, are craving new ingredients to meet the dietary needs and trends of the industry today, and SRIS will promote scientific advancement and efficiency while maintaining the safety standards that our animals and consumers deserve.”

SRIS will serve as an additional review pathway alongside the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s GRAS Notice program.

Experts interested in serving on SRIS review panels must submit a curriculum vitae and disclose any potential conflicts of interest. More information is available on the SRIS website.
