Brownsville, Ky. (WBKO) -Summer break is anything but slow at the Edmonson County Public Library, where the halls are alive with color, creativity, and community spirit.
This year’s summer theme, “Color Our World,” is designed to give children the chance to explore art through hands-on projects and interactive programming. Library Director Alicia Edwards says the idea was to blend fun with purpose—inviting kids to help decorate the library through their own creations.
“It’s completely art-themed,” Edwards said. “We thought it would be really fun for the kids to be able to do their own artwork… because they’re really the reason we’re here.”
But the programming goes beyond painting and crafting. The library is also encouraging summer reading by offering reading logs, free books, and prize incentives for participants. The goal is to keep young readers engaged and motivated while school is out.
“We’re definitely pushing for them to continue to read throughout the summer because it is very important,” Edwards said.
In a rural area with fewer options for summer activities, the library has become a vital resource for local families. Edwards says her small but passionate team works hard to provide experiences kids might otherwise have to travel far to find.
“We try to provide programs they’d have to drive miles down the road to get to,” she said. “We’re really creative to make sure families have something fun to do in the summer.”
And for Edwards, the impact is clear. After one recent event, a young girl came up to her and said simply: “All of it was my favorite part.”
It’s moments like that, Edwards says, that remind her why the work matters.
“We have a small staff, but we really do love our community,” she said.
The “Color Our World” program continues through the summer, with activities and reading opportunities still open for families
