GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) – During the dog days of summer, the Humane Society of South Mississippi is offering a reading program for kids.

Club Paws helps kids sharpen their reading skills by reading to shelter pets.
On Monday, a group of children were at the Humane Society of South Mississippi in Gulfport participating in the program.
“I was reading to the dogs and the cats because they need someone to help hang out with them,” said one young reader.

During the summer program, kids can also make and share treats with the animals as a fun way to help reduce kennel stress and promote adoptions.

Club Paws is for children ages 5 to 15.
The program runs most Mondays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in June and July.
