Experience a taste of South American at this new Shelby food truck

Food lovers can experience a taste of Colombia at Viva la Empanada, a recently opened food truck in Shelby.

The family-owned and run business offers diners all the flavors of popular dishes from the South American country, located at the north east side of the continent.

Entrees include the Bandeja Paisa, which is a traditional dish packed with protein and featuring grilled steak, pork rind, sausage, rice, beans, sweet plantain, egg and avocado.

Colombian Patacones, another traditional dish, consist of fried green plantains with shredded beef and chicken, ham, queso, avocado and sauces.

There are five different kinds of empanadas on the menu, with beef, chicken, pork, cheese or ham and cheese fillings for $2.99 each. The fried, handheld pastries come with dipping sauces and a slice of lime, both important to fully experience the tasty treats.

And then there are the Colombian-style hot dogs.

The Hawaiin hot dog is a flavorful combination of cheese, onions, pineapple, ham and a sprinkling of potato chips on top.

Sides include options such as Colombian beans, cassava, French fries, creole potatoes, corn cakes and more. There are Jarritos, Colombian sodas and fresh juice beverages.

Isabella Sanchez, a 2023 Crest High graduate and current Cleveland Community College student who said she is studying to be a veterinarian, runs the food truck along with her mother, father and siblings.

The family immigrated from Bogota, Colombia, 20 years ago and after living in Charlotte for more than a decade, the family of six settled in Shelby around seven years ago.

Ivan Sanchez, Isabella’s father, said they use fresh fruit and natural ingredients in their drinks and plates.

“We want to bring Colombian food to Shelby,” he said.

He said it is a way to not only share the flavors of his home country but the culture as well.

Ivan Sanchez said he loves to experience different cultures and wants to bring that opportunity to Shelby. He said what they offer is something a little different, and he encouraged the community to come out and try Viva la Empanada.

“Support local owners,” he said.

The food truck launched at the end of last year and is often set up on weekends at Circle M Livestock Safari Park in Shelby. They also sometimes set up at Lowe’s and other locations in the county Wednesday through Sunday. People can find hours and locations on Viva la Empanada’s Facebook page.
