The mercurial nature of the British weather means we’re often taken unawares by sudden heatwaves. One day you’re shivering on the way to the office in your winter coat; the next everyone’s planning barbecues and you need to find your best summer dress again – and do something about your pasty winter limbs.
That’s when we turn to our Good Housekeeping Institute experts’ roundup of the best fake tans. Every product in our list has been analysed in our lab and with readers at home, to ensure it delivers a gorgeous, even glow without that biscuity smell or orange streaks.
But, in our rigorous tests, one product stood out from the rest for speed, gorgeous golden results and lack of staining. Enter: Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Tanning Foam, here to help you achieve a faux glow, without staining your bedsheets, clothes or PJs. Here’s everything you need to know about our beauty lab’s top-scoring tanner (and why you need it in your beauty bag).

The Good Housekeeping Institute verdict
We test fake tans with the help of our at-home panel – 250 of them to be exact! They give us detailed feedback on the essentials, including ease of application, whether the product leaves any streaks, what they thought of the texture and smell, and if it came off on their sheets. Back in our beauty lab, our experts use a specialist DigiEye machine to analyse the tan’s performance over seven days, looking at how quickly and evenly it fades. We then collate everything into a final score.
The Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Tanning Foam was a big hit across the board, scoring an impressive 94/100. All our testers said it absorbed quickly into the skin, which meant it didn’t transfer onto their clothes or soft furnishings, and it developed quickly (perfect for those last minute I-want-to-wear-a-sundress-to-the-office-tomorrow emergencies). It also delivered a golden glow straight worthy of its Aussie roots (minus any sun damage of course).
The mousse also contains hydrating Argan oil, so it won’t dry your skin out, and our panellists enjoyed the summery, coconut scent. No biscuity smell here. “It looks really good,” was one satisfied – and concise – customer’s feedback.
Bottled sunshine for under £20? We’ll take it.
GH beauty editor’s verdict
“Ever since I applied that first layer of Garnier’s gradual tanning moisturiser at the age of 13, I’ve been absolutely hooked on fake tan. Thanks to my Welsh, Irish and Scottish heritage, I have a pale and pasty disposition. Less like the ’English rose’ complexions of Anne Hathaway or Emma Stone, and more that of a sickly Victorian child.
“So, it’s fair to say I’ve made my way through many many, many tanning products in my time, and Bondi Sands Liquid Gold is my new favourite. Not only does it add a lovely, natural-looking shade to my complexion, but it also fades evenly, so I don’t have to face the dreaded 30-minute shower scrub as often.
“It’s easy to apply, too, as you simply add a couple of pumps to a mitt and get to work. You may need to enlist some help for back coverage, though (or invest in a back applicator – yes, such a thing exists). Take it from a three-times-a-week fake tanner, the results you get from this make it an absolute steal, and a bathroom cabinet staple.” – Madeleine Evans, Lifestyle Writer
