WAUSAU — The Wausau Finance Committee will meet this week to discuss and take possible action on four key items, including a major fire truck purchase, airport terminal project funding, road maintenance, and changes to the city’s room tax ordinance.
Here’s a preview of the agenda:
Here’s what’s on the agenda:
Fire truck purchase tied to pending vehicle sale
Wausau Fire Chief Jeremy Kopp is seeking approval to purchase a new fire truck for $1,358,197, with a $70,175 discount if paid before the end of June. That would reduce the total to $1,288,022. The department expects to receive about $1.1 million from the sale of Ladder 2, which is nearing completion. To cover the remaining $188,022, the department proposes using 2023 Ground Emergency Medical Transport (GEMT) funds. An additional $50,000 in GEMT revenue would be used to cover anticipated sale-related expenses from Brindlee Fire Apparatus.
Temporary airport project funding
The committee will consider a resolution to approve a $135,000 change order for additional work on the Wausau Downtown Airport terminal renovation project. The work involves repairs to the building’s brick façade, roof, and windows, uncovered during the ongoing $1.4 million renovation. The city is being asked to front the $135,000 as a “sponsor-only” expense while the Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics secures additional approvals. The city is expected to be reimbursed for 95 percent of the cost — or $131,250 — through FAA grant funding. The net cost to the city would be $3,750.
Street maintenance funding increase
Due to a mild winter, the city realized $250,000 in savings from the 2024 winter salt and sand budget. The committee will consider reallocating those funds for additional milling and overlay street maintenance in 2025. The proposal emphasizes that pavement conditions significantly influence resident satisfaction and that the additional work would help improve overall infrastructure.
Room tax ordinance amendments
The committee will also discuss proposed amendments to Chapter 3.25 of the Wausau Municipal Code, which governs how room tax is administered. While the meeting packet does not include the full language of the proposed amendments, they are expected to address updates or clarifications to how the city collects and uses room tax revenue.
The meeting is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, in Council Chambers at City Hall, 407 Grant St., Wausau. Members of the public can attend the meeting in person or submit comments in advance via email to [email protected] with “Finance Committee Public Comment” in the subject line. Comments must pertain to agenda items and will be provided to the committee chair if received before the meeting begins.
The agenda does not include general public comment; comments must be tied to listed agenda items. Requests for ADA accommodations should be made at least 72 hours in advance by contacting the city’s ADA Coordinator at (715) 261-6590 or [email protected].
