AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin City Council approved a measure last week that would make it easier for food trucks to be inspected.
Council members voted on Thursday, June 5, to add two fees for vendors to pay to have on-site inspections for their food trucks. The measure was approved on consent.
Under the new process, food truck vendors can opt to get their trucks inspected on-site. Previously, vendors would have to drive the trucks to a facility in North Austin to be inspected.
Visit Austin estimates that around 2,000 food trucks operate in Austin, and they are required to get inspected annually.
The new fee for on-site inspections will cost $740 and re-inspections will cost $230.
Last year, the City Council passed a resolution authorizing the city manager to “explore options related to permit applications and health authority inspections of mobile food establishments,” according to documents.
In a survey from Austin Public Health, 92% of food truck owners said they wanted the option of on-site permitting inspections.
The new program will begin this month.
