COLUMBUS — It was the end of the Maggie era at Salem High School.
Salem seniors Maggie Hall and Maggie Hopple, four-year state qualifiers in track and cross country, wrapped up their high school careers with one race together Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Hall claimed her first individual track medal with a fifth-place finish in the Division II 1600-meter run in 4 minutes, 56.24 seconds, believed to be the fastest in Columbiana County history.
Her time two seconds faster than last year’s winner.
Hopple, who placed sixth at state last year, finished 12th (5:08.80). She was first with two laps to go and second with one lap to go.
She was passed by Hall along the way. Hall was 13th with two laps to go.
Their careers ended with Hall qualifying for the state track meet in 14 events — including four straight years in the 800 run and 3200 relay — and Hopple in 11 events.
Hall didn’t have much left for the 800 run, finishing 17th (2:21.78).
Minerva freshman Tateum Richard was 12th (2:18.73).
