‘For the sake of the kids’: St. George mothers turn personal tragedy into safe space for families

ST. GEORGE — Two St. George women, shaped by shared experiences of kidnapping, custody battles and family tragedy, have joined forces to start a nonprofit aimed at making a lasting difference.

“Our No. 1 goal has always been to turn tragedy into triumph — all for the sake of the kids,” Blue Butterfly House co-founder Suzun Abbott told St. George News.

Abbott said Blue Butterfly House provides supervised visits for children in custody cases, domestic violence situations or when a parent struggles with substance abuse. The nonprofit provides a safe, neutral space, thereby avoiding the discomfort and risks associated with using family members as supervisors. Blue Butterfly House maintains strict neutrality, she added.

Co-founder Debbie Heisler said the organization serves as a bridge for families divided by trauma, conflict or the court system, offering them a chance to reconnect with dignity and support.

“We aren’t here to judge the past,” Heisler said. “We’re here to protect children in the present and make healing possible for the future.”
