Kids learn about chemical reactions during Science Saturday at Smith

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – The Sixth Street Museum District hosted a fun and free event for children Saturday that taught them a little something about science.

The theme for the latest Science Saturday at Smith Drug Co. was ‘Pop Rocks and Rolaids.’

It was all about checking out chemical reactions involving everyday items like soda pop and antacids.

The event also honors doctors, dentists and pharmacists who helped shape local African-American history.

“The philosophy is that we want to, of course, continue the legacy of E. Hammond Smith and James Cohen and the Smith family, but also, introduce young people to the STEM disciplines,” said Vanessa Molden, operations and visitor engagement manager for the Sixth Street Museum District.

Beginning Monday, June 9, at the Historic Eureka School, the Sixth Street Museum District will host the week-long, Charles J. Brown Youth Civic Engagement and Leadership Camp.
