32nd annual Kids Fishing Day at Pocket Park

ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) – The weather was perfect for the 32nd annual Kids Fishing Day.

There was more than just fishing for kids at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Pocket Park in the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba.

Minnow races, archery and Smokey the Bear were all on hand. All activities were free of charge for kids 16 years old and younger.

Brenda Madden, a Kids Fishing Day committee member, says this is a great chance for kids to just be in the sun.

“There’s so many kids today that are stuck in the house, that are on their boxes or on electronics,” said Madden. “We just want them to get the exposure to being outdoors and getting the feel of other things to do.”

Madden says there were more than 70 volunteers who helped out with Kids Fishing Day this year. Partners included Hiawatha National Forest and Bay De Noc Great Lakes Sport Fishermen.

This is also the Three Free Weekend hosted by the DNR. You can fish, ride ORV’s and visit state parks without any licenses this weekend.
