KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Twelve Baskets Food Pantry in Portage opened their newly renovated community store Saturday amid increasing food insecurity in our area.
The store provides garage sale-priced new and used essentials. All proceeds from sales will go towards the food bank’s efforts to combat hunger in the community.
Prices on everything from clothing, kitchen appliances, toys, and others will be priced 75% or more off of retail price, organizers said, and many items are available for as little as $1.
The opening of the community store wouldn’t have been possible without the help from community members, according to an organizer.
“Our community is great. We depend on our community to keep our doors open, and, just look at all the people here supporting Twelve Baskets. A lot of the people come every year just because they want to support us,” said Robin Tullock, a board member of Twelve Baskets.
It took the people at Twelve Baskets roughly nine months to renovate their property for their community store.
Twelve Baskets provides a grocery cart full of food twice a month for families. Right now, they’re assisting roughly 350 families at their weekly distributions, according to organizers.
The community store is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. More info can be found here.
