Parent charged after two kids accidentally shot in Carteret County

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – A parent is charged after two children were injured in an accidental shooting in their home in Carteret County, deputies say.

Deputies have charged 36-year-old Lucio Zarate with improperly storing a firearm. They did not say whether he was the parent of just one or both children.

Over Memorial Day weekend, deputies say they went to a report of two children injured after a gun was fired at the home of 101 Delmar Court outside of Newport.

When they arrived, they found that a four-year-old had been shot in the leg, and another child suffered a grazing injury to the leg.

Deputies say both children were sitting on a couch when they discovered a loaded gun in the center console. One of the children grabbed the gun, which then accidentally went off, hitting the first child and grazing the second.

Both children were taken to the hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.

The sheriff’s office shared this information after WITN asked about the shooting this afternoon.
