Blue Jayne Studio Owner Mariah Desatoff wants to keep children’s creative juices flowing throughout the summer.
That’s why she has constructed a string of week-long art camps that run throughout the season at the studio, 270 N. Main St. in Kamas.
“I’m offering six different camps, and they all are themed,” she said. “The first camp starts June 9, and they all will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m..”
Registration is now open at bluejayne.com, and the schedule and themes are as follows:
June
- 9-13 — Famous Artists
- 16-20 — Dream Decor
July
- 7-11 — Classic Crafts
- 14-18 — Nature Art
August
- 4-8 — Tinker Workshop
- 11-15 — Mini Museums
Desatoff spent some time thinking about the themes because she wanted to make each class unique.
“For example, we have a great outdoor space at the studio, so the camps will be held both inside and outside,” she said. “And since we’re going to be outside, one of the themes is Nature Art because I wanted to incorporate things we could use outside.”
Some of Desatoff’s current art-students inspired the Tinker Workshop camp.
“I have a lot of kids who are into building and engineering, so the Tinker Workshop is where there will be a lot of building and creating, using recycled things,” she said. “I’ve seen what the interests of the kids who are in my classes now, and I’ve asked them questions about what they would like to do and built off of that.”
The camps are designed for ages 5 to 14 for a reason, according to Desatoff.
“When I was growing up in Ohio, my grandmother had a summer camp, and I worked as the arts-and-crafts counselor,” she said. “I love kids and art, and I get excited watching their excitement when learning about and discovering new things. I’ve done this my whole life, and I’m excited to have an indoor/outdoor space to do this.”
Desatoff is also planning to start a once-a-week summer art club for elementary school-aged kids and a Kid’s Night Out, where parents have a date night after dropping kids off for a project session.
She also has plans to host themed birthday parties and private art evenings in the outside space.
Desatoff hasn’t forgotten adults.
“I’m excited to offer a three-session beginner enameling workshop, where guests will leave with multiple finished jewelry that they create,” she said.
Desatoff will also offer a beginning watercolor painting workshop, a barn quilt workshop, a hat burning and embellishing class, a block printed canvas bag class and a silk-scarf painting workshop.
“Details about each class will be on my website soon,”she said. “It’s going to be a busy summer filled with art.”
Desatoff enjoys teaching classes, especially children because they aren’t jaded or cynical.
“I love how creative they are,” she said. “I love that they aren’t inhibited, and I love that they don’t judge.”
Since the summer camps run in the morning, parents don’t have to pack full lunches, Desatoff said.
“The kids can bring a water bottle and a snack, but I wanted to make sure the camps would end in time so the kids could enjoy lunch with their parents,” she said.
Desatoff also thought about the parents while drawing up her summer-camp schedule.
“Kamas is so close to areas for recreation — hiking, biking, paddleboarding — so parents can drop their kids off at the camps and have some fun time for themselves,” she said. “There are plenty of things for parents to do, so they don’t have to keep driving back and forth from home to Kamas and back.”
