Shasta County ensures kids are fed with free summer meals program

The Shasta County Office of Education is once again offering its free summer meals program to ensure students receive proper nutrition throughout the summer months. The program, which provides free breakfast and lunch to children 18 and under, is available at over two dozen locations across the county.

The Office of Education said any student who is 18 or under just has to show up to any of the locations offering free breakfast and lunch to kids in Shasta County.

The initiative is designed to support families by providing healthy meals to children when school is not in session. Leaders of the program said they have received positive feedback from grateful parents and students who benefit from the service each year.

“It’s important for kids to be healthy and sometimes it can be a struggle for families to make sure that their kids have a healthy meal and so the schools are committed to helping make sure that kids have a nice healthy meal throughout the summertime,” said a Kerri Schutte, Communications Director for Shasta County Office of Education.

Meals must be consumed on-site, and the child receiving the meal must be present. However, children do not need to be students of the location they visit, allowing families to choose the most convenient site. For children with dietary restrictions, parents are advised to check with the site beforehand to ensure accommodations can be made.

The program operates almost every weekday throughout the summer, starting June 9.
