Bring donations, win prizes at this annual downtown Howell business’ food drive

A large-scale annual food drive will return to Heart of Michigan at 203 W. Grand River Ave. in Howell on June 14.

The event will collect food and other necessities for Gleaners Community Food Bank, in addition to celebrating 14 years in business for Heart of Michigan. The drive runs 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

According to a release from the business, the first 50 people to donate 15 or more non-perishable, non-expired items will receive a bag of Michigan-made items donated from companies like Cherry Republic, Faygo and Motown Soup. Others who donate throughout the day can enter for a chance to win special prizes.

“It’s our way of giving back … and supporting Gleaners,” owner Karen Wing told The Daily. “(Gleaners) makes a big impact on our community and helps people in need.”

Wing said the food drive provided 1,382 meals in 2023. This year, she said, Gleaners needs even more help, thanks to an increased cost of living.

Visitors can also participate in food sampling and a book signing and performance by Michigan authors and comedians Karen Bell-Brege and Darrin Brege.

Heart of Michigan opened in 2011. Wing and her husband chose to focus on Michigan products to support the state’s economy and promote small businesses after the Great Recession.
