LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – The school hallways are quiet, which means houses are a bit louder as kids are home for summer break.
To keep them busy, some parents take their kids to public pools, water parks, and beaches, but all of those things can be costly and don’t work every day.
Stay-at-home mom Sara Morrow, who has five children under 8, manages to not only entertain but also educate them all summer long.
Morrow has a Bachelor of Science in education, so she has a knack for teaching, but she said somehow, her children are the ones who have taught her the most in her life so far.
“When I had just one or two kids, it was easier to be less structured, and less routine, and I had a little bit more freedom in my day in that, but as I added more children to our family, definitely more structure was needed, more routine. Kids really thrive on routine. I noticed that they’re more relaxed and more compliant, even if they know what the next thing is, and so they know what to expect every day, when they wake up. They know our typical routine,” Morrow said.
Outside of household activities, she finds time to take her children to do karate, dance class and even piano practice.
She believes that the best way for moms to get their daily household chores done while also entertaining young children is simply to involve them intheir daily activities.
For older kids, entertaining them can be a little harder.
“I feel at the point where they’re 14 years plus, they’re looking for those moments of real, genuine connection, more so than entertainment. They’re looking for moments that matter and have substance to them,” Kinder High School Counselor Hayley Smith said.
Summer may mean no school, but experts say it shouldn’t be a break from learning.
