Food Bank of Siouxland concerned with proposed cuts to SNAP

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Representatives from the Food Bank of Siouxland say their agency could be affected by the proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” in Congress.

The Food Bank’s executive director, Jacob Wanderscheid, said the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” would make nearly $300 billion in cuts over the next 10 years to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as “SNAP.”

That could translate to a loss of over 9 billion meals a year.

Food Bank officials predict this will cause more people to turn to places like the Food Bank of Siouxland for food, which would increase the strain on the Food Bank’s already limited resources.

Wanderscheid says the impact would spread throughout the community.

“Lots of our communities do rely on that program,” said Wanderscheid. “For every dollar that’s spent, it produces $1.50 in economic development. For every dollar spent, 20 cents goes back to a farmer that helped produce that product.“

Food Bank representatives want Congress to reconsider the proposed changes to SNAP to better serve local communities.

The Food Bank of Siouxland serves 85 food pantries in Iowa and Nebraska.
