LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – Cristina Bueno, volunteer coordinator for Voz de Niños, talked about opportunities for volunteers to become advocates for children in the court system.
Bueno said summer is a great time for people, especially educators on break, to get trained as child advocates. “Training can take time during busy schedules, but summer is perfect to get ready for the year ahead,” she said.
Volunteers learn about what kinds of cases they will see and how to support children who may have experienced abuse. After training, volunteers are sworn in by a judge and receive their first case.
Advocates usually work with one child at a time, following their case for 12 to 18 months. Bueno said volunteers build strong bonds with the children during this time.
The program works with children of all ages, from newborns and toddlers to teens. Teachers and others familiar with kids of all ages are encouraged to volunteer.
