LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — Hunger remains a pressing issue in Louisiana, with 828,000 people facing food insecurity, according to Feeding America. Among them, 250,000 are children.
The Second Harvest Food Bank is now participating in the 2025 Summer Food Service Program. This initiative ensures that children, like those at the Jackie Unit of the Boys and Girls Club of Acadiana, receive meals during the summer.
“In Acadiana right now, we’re serving 1,500 meals a day and just keeping that continuity between kids who get an opportunity to still have lunch at school, but while school’s out during the summertime, we continue that opportunity for them,” Paul Scelfo from Second Harvest Food Bank said.
“The kids are here from 7:30 to 5:30, not ensuring that they’ll be able to pack lunch to come here. So, partnering with Second Harvest makes us know for sure that these kids are getting a breakfast and a lunch the whole time they’re here with us,” Eboney Breaux with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Acadiana added.

The program ensured no discrimination in meal services, aligning with USDA guidelines. Meals are available at multiple locations across a few parishes in Acadiana.
The program launched successfully, serving meals to 190 kids on its first day. Children enjoyed hot dogs, tater tots, and vegetables, with meals planned for the next eight weeks.
“Yes, sir. We’ll do this during the whole summer up until August 1st actually,” Breaux emphasized.
