Buchanan qualifies for U.S. Open

ATLANTA — Former Illinois standout Jackson Buchanan qualified for the 2025 U.S. Open on Monday, firing consecutive rounds of 9-under 63 at Piedmont Driving Club to tie for the top spot at the qualifier.

Buchanan and 17-year-old Georgia high school junior Mason Howell both finished at 18-under for the 36-hole day. Monday was qualifier day for the U.S. Open with hundreds of golfers at different 10 sites — nine in the United States and one in Canada — trying to secure a spot in the 2025 U.S. Open set for June 12-15 at Oakmont Country Club in Plum, Pa.

Also advancing out of the qualifier at Piedmont Driving Club were English amateur Tyler Weaver, former Auburn star Jackson Koivun — the No. 2-ranked golfer in the World Amateur Golf Rankings — and tour pro Will Chandler. Among the notable golfers in the field in Atlanta that missed the cut were Masters and Open Championship winner Zach Johnson and five-time PGA Tour winners Jason Dufner and J.B. Holmes.

Buchanan had 11 birdies and two bogeys in his first round Monday. His second round featured seven birdies, one bogey and an albatross two on the 552-yard par-five 10th hole. Closing his second round with a birdie on No. 18 got him to 18-under on the day to tie Howell.

This month’s U.S. Open will be the second of Buchanan’s career after playing last year at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, N.C. He missed the cut after carding rounds of 76 and 70 in an all-Illini group along with Thomas Detry and Brian Campbell.
