Camp Discovery gives kids with cancer a free camp, thanks to blood donor support

SAN ANTONIO — Blood donors in South Texas have a unique opportunity to double their impact by helping send children living with cancer to summer camp.

Each June, South Texas Blood & Tissue partners with Camp Discovery, a summer camp for children aged 7 to 16, to offer this chance. Donors earn points with every blood donation, which can be donated to Camp Discovery. Last year, these efforts helped sponsor 23 children to attend the camp.

Camp Discovery provides a week-long experience at no cost to families, allowing children with serious health conditions to create lasting memories, friendships, and personal growth. The camp has left a significant impression on many, including David James Trujillo. Diagnosed at age 2 with acute lymphocytic leukemia, Trujillo spent much of his childhood undergoing chemotherapy and hospital visits.

Reflecting on his time at Camp Discovery, Trujillo, now 36, said, “I was once that kid, and Camp Discovery gave me a chance to connect with others who understood my experience.” He added, “Seeing their strength inspired me to give back. I knew I had to be there for them, just like others were there for me.”

Trujillo now volunteers as a counselor at the camp, emphasizing the importance of community and support. “It’s about living and helping others along the way,” he said. “That’s what life is really all about.”

A quarter of all blood transfusions annually are given to cancer patients. Those interested in donating blood can schedule an appointment by calling 210-731-5590 or visiting SouthTexasBlood.org.
