Middle school sisters teaching financial literacy to kids get big surprise

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Two young sisters who launched a financial literacy program were surprised by the Atlanta News First Surprise Squad Friday.

Sariel and Zion Phillips, the young minds behind “I Got Bank,” are not your typical 5th and 7th graders. What began six years ago as a school project has blossomed into a full-fledged financial literacy business. Their mission? Teaching kids how to save, invest, and build wealth at a young age.

“In the workbook, we also have business ideas so they can start and have another source of money other than their parents,” said 13-year-old Sariel Phillips.

From leading workshops to selling custom workbooks, the sisters teach students across Georgia the value of smart money habits. “I Got Bank” is a financial literacy business where we cultivate among students, teaching them how to build wealth,” said 11-year-old Zion Phillips.

Their passion and impact caught the attention of Bridgette Reynolds of United Community, who saw them present at an event in Cobb County and nominated the two to receive a visit from the Atlanta News First Surprise Squad.

“When I tell you they did such an amazing job teaching financial literacy, I had to reach out,” Reynolds said.

When the girls walked through the doors, they were greeted with applause and more than a few surprises. Zion was gifted Amazon gift cards, something she said she had just asked her mom for. “I really, really love Amazon!” she said, smiling.

The surprises did not stop there. Sariel, who had been dreaming of a birthday celebration at Top Golf, learned it was going to happen.

“I see myself in my dreams as a big-time lawyer,” Zion said. But for now, both sisters are focused on helping their peers gain confidence, avoid debt, and create financially stable futures.

“We want students to have less of that fear in the future and be more financially stable now,” said Sariel.

With big dreams and an even bigger mission, the Phillips sisters prove that you are never too young to make a difference.
