TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The Epsilon Psi Sigma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho made a splash at their annual Swim 1922 program Sunday, June 1.
“Our goal is to teach as many children as we possibly can to be water safe so that they won’t be afraid and maybe the can help themselves and help others,” Sorority President Rosalyn Carr said.
The event taught kids how to float, hold their breath and swim safely. Carr says they hope these skills make a lasting impact.
“Hopefully we can get them starting out at 8 years old and have them keep coming year after year and become a life guard,” Carr said.
After their lesson, kids received awards but parents say their new skills are the best reward of the day.
“We got her comfortable putting her head under the water. We did a dunk and she was fine,” parent Mandy Palmer said. “She enjoyed everything.”
“My youngest she’s terrified of water so it kind of ease her into the water a little bit today,” parent Cyarra Sherley said.
