Six local food banks receive over 28k pounds of food from generous donation

Six food pantries in Southwest Michigan received much-needed help in the form of over 28,800 pounds of nonperishable food.

The generous donation came from the Kalamazoo Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with support from volunteers, missionaries, and others.

The donation started when the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced they would send a semi truck full of food to the area, according to organizers.

Katherine Atkinson, communication director for the Kalamazoo Stake, then reached out to local food pantries to see who needed support.

Food pantries from Westwood United Methodist Church, Milwood United Methodist Church, Gathering Harvest, Valley Family Church, Bread of Life Food Pantry/Catholic Charities, and Twelve Baskets all received food for their shelves.

“This donation couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Ramona Cuzk, pantry director at Twelve Baskets.

Volunteers from each pantry, members of the community, and missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints delivered the food on May 29.

The donation comes at a time when many families are still experiencing food insecurity, according to organizers, and the donation helps bring hope and relief to those affected.
