Kids ‘Pedal with Police’ on last day of school

GLADSTONE, Mich. (WLUC) – Friday morning, kids got to ride their bikes to school with police officers for the last day of school.

Elementary school students gathered at Kids Kingdom in Gladstone around 7:30 am. A police escort led the children about a half mile down the road to James T. Jones Elementary School.

10-year-old 3rd grader Kelsey Sanville said she had a lot of fun.

“I like that all my friends were there, and I got to ride bikes with them,” said Sanville. “That we got to, like, ride on the road cause I’ve never got to do that before.”

Gladstone Public Safety Officer Mallory Nelson wanted a fun way to end the school year.

“I wanna build positive relationships with law enforcement and that’s part of the reason why I had so many different departments be part of this bike ride,” said Nelson.

Michigan State Police, the Delta County Sheriff’s Department and the Gladstone Public Safety Department all helped out Friday morning.

Principal Holly Howes and Assistant Principal Heidi Charon rode a tandem bike.

Nelson, also the James T. Jones Elementary School Resource Officer, says this was the first ‘Pedal with Police’. She hopes to keep the tradition alive next year.
