At a time when the challenge to feed those in need is greater than ever, the York County Food Bank will be receiving a big boost Monday to help with that challenge.

The food bank will be receiving a shipment of 30,000 pounds of canned goods and dry commodities from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah to help those who need it in York County. That shipment will be arriving on a 53-foot tractor-trailer around 9 a.m. at their facility located at 15 Marianne Dr in Manchester Township.

York County Food Bank President and CEO Jennifer Brillhart said the food shipment is especially welcome after news came earlier this year that the federal government would stop shipments to the food bank.

“The donation . . . is one example of how community support is helping us bridge the gap during this challenging time,” she said.

Earlier this year, the food bank raised the alarm about food shipments that were halted as part of the Trump Administration’s budget cuts. The loss of shipments from the federal government costs the food bank an estimated $1 million worth of food annually, Brillhart said.

“It has significantly impacted our ability to distribute key items such as dairy, frozen meats, and other staples,” she added.

Brillhart said that, as of now, the York County Food Bank has not received any updates or confirmation from the federal government regarding the restoration of the halted food shipments.

“We are continuing to adapt by strengthening local partnerships, pursuing alternative funding sources, and optimizing our operations to ensure we can still serve the 40,000 individuals who rely on us each month,” she said.

According to the York County Food Bank, food pantries and faith organizations collaborate to serve those experiencing food insecurity. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints produces many of its products and desires to provide support to local communities to lift their neighbors in need.

Local nonprofits aim to help relieve food insecurity as well as meet basic needs. In that spirit, the York County Food Bank seeks to address food scarcity within York County.

“We are incredibly grateful for this generous food donation,” Brillhart said. “Right now, many of our neighbors in York County are facing significant challenges, and we’re seeing increased need across the board. This donation will go directly to our partner agencies and help ensure that those experiencing food insecurity receive the support they need.”
