Bristol Tennessee City Schools have launched their Summer Free Meals Program, providing vital support to families facing food insecurity.
Every Thursday through July 10, parents can pick up free seven-day meal kits for each child under 18 at Avoca Elementary between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Jennifer Burleson, the School Nutrition Director for Bristol Tennessee City Schools, emphasized the importance of the program. “We want to help, you know, meet the need financially and nutritionally and we know that right now, you know, that’s a big problem for a lot of families,” she said. “We love what we do, and we are excited to feed kids and make sure they have opportunity to great nutrition, whether they’re in school or out.”
The meal kits, which include breakfast, lunch, and two jugs of milk, are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. A parent or guardian must be present for pickup, but children do not.
Mary Szeluga, a Bristol resident expressed her gratitude for the program. “We have 9 kids…and it takes up a lot and we love those kids, and we want them to have the best and that they need extra food to keep them healthy. I’m ready to wait in line for three hours if I have to,” she said.
This initiative is part of a broader mission to support student well-being throughout the year. By removing barriers to access and ensuring children remain nourished, the district aims to provide every child with a stronger start, even when school is not in session.
