WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – As temperatures rise across Texas, many families are heading to the pool to beat the heat. But while summer fun is almost here, safety must remain a top priority.
The Texas Legal Group reports that Texas experiences hundreds of pool drownings each year, many involving children under the age of 5.
For anyone planning to go swimming who wants to keep their children safe, experts say the most important step is constant supervision. They also recommend keeping younger swimmers close and having a firm grasp on their comfort level in the water.
Alyssa Ulibarri, program director at the local YMCA, said many swimmers – both children and adults – fall victim to overconfidence.
“They think they can do it. They jump in and they kind of freak out when the water goes over their head and they don’t know what to do. Same with adults, they’re trying to get across, like maybe they can swim a little bit, but if they’re trying to get across and then all of a sudden, they get too tired and realize they can’t make it all the way,” Ulibarri said.
Ulibarri emphasized the importance of teaching children what drowning looks like and the dangers of water before allowing them near any body of water.
“Make them aware of the dangers. I think that’s where I see a lot of kids aren’t aware. You guys know your kids better than anyone else. You know their confidence levels. Just make sure that you teach them those rules before they get in the water,” Ulibarri said.
Ulibarri also recommends introducing children to water as early as possible.
“We start here at six months at the YMCA, but the sooner the better that your child gets acclimated to the water, because sometimes the older kids who haven’t been exposed may freak out a little more,” Ulibarri said.
Swimming lessons are available for children at the YMCA and Lucy Park Pool.
