WYOMING, Mich. — It’s distribution day for the Wyoming Public Schools’ mobile food pantry.
This is something the school district has been doing for the last several years.
The food pantry used to operate out of three different elementary schools in the district. Now, it’s just at Wyoming High School with district leaders hopeful that just one, central location will make it easier for the community to find them.
The food is provided by Feeding America. The food is then organized and boxed by students.
13 ON YOUR SIDE spoke with three Wyoming High School juniors.
Harmoni Green talked about volunteering and said, “It just makes me feel good. Giving back always make you feel better than when you started because you should help the people around you if you have the option.”
“Everybody kind of has their own job where they put a certain item into the box,” said Leslie Villalobos.
Vanessa Leos told our crew, “It’s just really nice to help out the community that helped me so much to, you know, raise me. I’ve always grown up here.”
Anna Rivera is the support coordinator for the district. She said, “Anyone can show up. For the families in the community in the neighborhood, as well as people who travel from outside the county. We’ve had people from Sparta show up, from Kentwood, from Cascade.”
The distribution event starts at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. People often show up to get in line early, but school leaders are asking that you wait until school is out at 2 p.m.
This is drive-thru style. All you have to do is pull up, stay inside your car, and they’ll bring out your box of food.
They often see more than 100 families show up.
