Beat the heat without breaking the bank: Free summer fun for Houston families

Parents can keep kids active and entertained for free this summer in Houston at spots like Discovery Green and the Houston Zoo.

HOUSTON — If you’re a parent looking to keep the kids active, cool, and entertained without spending a fortune this summer, Houston offers plenty of ways to beat the heat and keep the kids busy while you leave your wallet at home.

One popular spot is downtown at Discovery Green. Summer fun was already on a roll this Memorial Day. Dozens of kids and their parents packed the park for a day full of fun. One of the main attractions is the man-made hill.

“We can slide down if we bring cardboard boxes and we can roll over everywhere,” eight-year-old Kirsten Hyde said.

The whole family can unwind with games, slides, an obstacle course, plus the always-popular Gateway Fountain. There are also free summer events, like concerts and movies. You can stay in the loop by signing up for the free newsletter.

“It’s all fenced in. It’s very safe. I noticed they had security. I like that part,” Anthony Matterson said.

If showing off your skateboard tricks is more your thing. You can find that adrenaline rush at Lee and Joe Jamail Skate Park near Eleanor Tinsley Park.

There, summer fun comes with free introductory skateboarding sessions at the 30,000-square-foot in-ground park. It is one of the largest in the country.

“It is pretty awesome. I’m from here, but I live in Dallas now, So, when I come down, there’s always something new down here,” Jason Moreno said.

If you are looking for a place to cool off while you explore outdoors, the Houston Zoo has a fresh, free solution.

The Katherine McGovern Water Play Park is packed with interactive features designed with a little education built in. It’s located near the giraffes and wildlife carousel and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Whether you want to learn some cool new tricks or just beat the heat, Houston has plenty of free ways to make memories this year.

The Houston Police stable at 5005 Little York is home to 38 horses that are part of HPD’s Mounted Patrol. You can visit and feed them for free. Bring your own bag of carrots and apples. Visitors are asked to limit treats to two per horse. The activity is free, but you’ve got to make an appointment. You can do that by emailing [email protected].
